Election Protection

The nation’s largest nonpartisan coalition working to protect the right to vote.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM:

  • Provides comprehensive voter information and educates the public on their right to vote.

  • Offers nonpartisan hotlines to answer voter questions and report problems.

  • Sends monitors to polling locations to oversee procedures and answer on-site questions.

  • Collects voter data and experiences, which are used to drive election law reform through community education, legislation, and litigation.

  • Trains volunteers and provides nonpartisan resources on addressing issues at the polls, including voter intimidation, electioneering, ballot issues, and accessibility concerns.

Election Protection Volunteer Opportunities and Materials

Chicago Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights leads Election Protection legal programs in Illinois and Indiana. Election Protection volunteers help Illinois and Indiana voters access the ballot during primary and general elections by answering calls to the nonpartisan 866-OUR-VOTE hotline and protecting access at the polls in select counties. Beyond answering questions and addressing problems at the polls, nonpartisan Election Protection volunteers contribute to a pro-voter environment on Election Day and can help to ease tensions and problem-solve in a way that centers the voter’s experience.

The Indiana Primary Election is on May 5, 2026. Want to help Indiana voters on Election Day? There are three ways to get involved:

  1. Serve virtually as a nonpartisan call center volunteer, answering calls to the 866-OUR-VOTE hotline. Hotline volunteers answer voters’ questions and help them work through problems at the polls to ensure they can vote and have that vote counted.

  1. Serve in person as a nonpartisan field volunteer. Field volunteers will be part of a small legal team in either Marion County or Allen County and will have the support of Chicago Lawyers’ Committee staff and community partners. As a field volunteer, you will support community partner programs working on protecting access to the ballot on Election Day.
