Fighting Hate Crime in Illinois: An Overview of Criminal and Civil Remedies and Protections

Course Description:

Hate crimes have increased dramatically over the past year in Illinois and across the nation. We all have a stake in responding effectively to bias-related crimes. Hate crime not only hurts individual victims; it is designed to intimidate the victims’ communities. In this two-hour course, our speakers will present an overview of hate crime—how it is defined, why it occurs, current rates and trends, reporting issues, and a summary of federal and state laws designed to combat bias-motivated crimes. The presentation will include a special focus on the Illinois Hate Crime Act and civil remedies provided under the law. Attorneys who are interested in representing victims of hate crime on a pro bono basis are encouraged to attend this training and sign up with Chicago Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights’ Hate Crime Project. The program is eligible for 2.0 hours of CLE credit in Illinois.  A certificate of attendance will be emailed to participants after the program.

Speakers:

Angelica D’Souza, LGBTQ and Hate Crime Victim Witness Specialist, Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office
Meg Gorecki, Regional Director, Region V, Community Relations Service, U.S. Department of Justice
Julie Justicz, Hate Crime Project, Chicago Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights
Alexander Vesselinovitch, Freeborn & Peters, LLP (tentative)
Registration: The course is free, but pre-registration is required for admittance.
