Since the bipartisan passage of Automatic Voter Registration (AVR) into state law last year, Chicago Lawyers' Committee has been working to ensure that the landmark legislation is implemented in a strong, timely, and community-centered manner.
Unfortunately, we have learned that the Secretary of State's office will not meet the July 1, 2018 deadline written in the law for establishing opt-out voter registration at Driver Services facilities - the cornerstone of AVR and the tool that would actually make registration “automatic” (read our recent Just Democracy Illinois coalition testimony here).
Next week, we have an opportunity to ask questions, get answers, and make our voices heard at a public hearing on AVR:
WHEN: 12:00 pm on Wednesday, May 23, 2018
WHERE: Chicago Election Board Lower Level Conference Room
69 W Washington St., Lower Level (in the Pedway)
WHO: Chicago Board of Elections, State Board of Elections, and Secretary of State's office are co-hosting this hearing
Please join us and the Just Democracy Illinois coalition at the hearing to participate, provide public comment, and ask questions about Automatic Voter Registration before the July implementation deadline. It is imperative to have a strong community presence at this hearing and demonstrate the breadth and depth of support for strong and timely AVR implementation in Illinois.
